I stayed in Fort Myers Florida for a few days after the NFDA Women’s conference! Visiting the beaches and living near the water during my stay always makes me think about why we are in this business to begin with!

Theses innovative women were like sponges ready to absorb new information about a “new” method of Cremation. Natural Cremation-AAD TM . Otherwise discussed as Alkaline Hydrolysis!

As the number of cremations rises toward 50% nationwide, and the pollutant effects go into our waters, how much longer will we be able to enjoy the lush beaches and waters of places like Barefoot Beach, in Southwest Florida, Bonita Springs?

Multiple generations were enjoying the sand and sun on the beach this morning when I visited. Children played with sand, with sand shovels, water making the same kind of things we have made for generations. Mothers swam with their children in the water and young couples enjoyed the clear, crisp waves moving toward the shore

Dark Skies didn't scare off the young family on the beach

Mother Nature was showering most of Southwest Florida with a rain shower today. Barefoot Beach was not spared! However, those of you who have ever spent much time in Florida know… just hold on… the showers will go away and the sun will be back!

These Beauties of nature kept us out of the rain!

The process of Alkaline Hydrolysis is the best current way to handle final disposition without damaging our environment for future generations. We are pleased to be on the forefront of the technology and to have installed units in this great state of Florida, Pennsylvania, and Puerto Rico. The process is approved in ME, MD, MN, IL, CO, KS, OR, and FL for Human Disposition. It can be used world wide for animal and medical disposition, right NOW!

Green is Good after the Storm

Educating the public and those in the funeral industry will continue to be my main objective as I continue to attend great conferences held by NFDA, ICCFA, IFDA, CANA, and build relationships to increase the number of Alkaline Hydrolysis units placed for Animal, Human, and Medical Disposition through out the world!

Thank you SWFL for hosting the event and giving me the opportunity to once again, enjoy the beauty of Florida!

Living in #SWFL Florida for over 25 years, It was very easy to take for granted the wildlife and the native birds so prevalent in Lee County. Developing relationships is important for us at EcoGreen International. We want you to understand our love for nature and our concern for being able to take moments like this serious. Enjoy the rest of the photos taken in Cape Coral Florida while on a Golf Outing with the Chamber of Southwest Florida. Timeless! It is so important to take time out of our busy days to focus on the things that are important! We hope you understand our passion! Our conversation can be about other things than Cremation! It’s about Natural Cremation, Alkaline Hydrolysis, and the way of taking care of the earth so that future generations can enjoy these images the same way I did.

Take a look at our website for EcoGreen International to learn more. !

Orefield, Pennsylvania has Lehigh Valley’s most current “GREEN” animal cremation facility. Located near Keystone Pet Cemetery, Pennsylvania Route 309, this facility is using Alkaline Hydrolysis as a final disposition for much loved pets! Pet and Environmentally friendly, they are also extremely innovative in their offering of beautiful Pet Cemetery and services.

Love for animals and pride in the earth, was quite evident while we toured the green alternative facility in Orefield, PA and the Pet Cemetery located at nearby Mertztown, PA. Visiting before Easter, the Cemetery was decorated for the holiday, with Rabbits, Eggs, and Flowers! Private Pet Funeral Services, offered graveside or in the “Pet Funeral” building on the premise, are options for families deciding how to handle the difficult transitions to life without their loved pet!

As time goes bye, more and states are approving the newest method of cremation. Alkaline Hydrolysis is good for the environment, it is less expensive than traditional cremation for B2B and for B2C, and is the right choice as cremation statistics continue to increase.

This year at ICCFA convention we were able to “Show & Tell” about our operating Enviro II units in Pennsylvania and Florida. Showing pictures, and discussing the actual operating process helped us to Educate those interested in Natural Cremation AAD-TM. (trademark of Eco-Green Cremation System, Inc)

Many interested Funeral and Cremation business owners stopped by our booth to learn more about our Enviro Platform of Green Cremation equipment. Many were from approved states and were looking for specific details about how to purchase the equipment. Others, were hoping for approval soon and were even considering the Pet Cremation Option as a supplement for their businesses or as a lead into the future when their states are approved.

A break out session, by Mr. John McQueen, Anderson-McQueen Funeral Homes discussed the subject of Alkaline Hydrolysis, Natural Cremation – the history, the future and current status of the process in the eight approved states. The approved states for Alkaline Hydrolysis are Minnesota, Maryland, and Maine, Florida, Colorado, Kansas, Oregon, and the newest…. not even announced at the ICCFA convention.. is Illinois.
His presentation substantiated the things we had been saying to our visitors at the booth during the show. We are both big proponents of offering options and educating not only those in the Funeral Industry but the public as well! We definitely agree, The Future is NOW!

Several Months ago, Nancy Burban and Joel Collins posted this podcast discussing the green benefits of Alkaline Hydrolysis. This week, we had the pleasure to show Nancy first hand, the product as it is operating at our Pet Facility in Orefield, Pennsylvania. Thank you Nancy for this awesome Podcast and for your interest in Alkaline Hydrolysis, Eco-Green International, &

The Earth, The Environment & YOU

Joel Collins on Natural Cremation –AAD ™

Nancy Burban: I’m Nancy Burban, chatting with Funeral professionals & providing you with insight to funeral industry topics, news & trends. Today I am speaking to a colleague & friend. He’s a Funeral Director & also the Founder & President of ECO Green Cremation Systems, Inc. Welcome Joel Collins.

Joel Collins: Thanks for visiting with me, Nancy.

Nancy: It’s my pleasure. Joel, let’s chat about green options. If you want to reduce your carbon footprint & be eco-friendly to the environment at the same time, there’s really only two ways to go. I’ve talked about traditional green burials & today, I’m going to talk about a second green option, Green Cremation, which disallows the use of embalming fluids & filters that trap toxins & escape into the atmosphere during the cremation process. It’s a way of disposing of human remains while remaining eco-friendly. Joel, tell us a little bit about your green cremation company and what your goals are.

Joel: My Company is ECO Green Cremation Systems, Inc. We’re trying to introduce a responsible choice to the cremation business. We believe that the responsible choice is; if you have an option to be eco-friendly & get the same job done, you would probably choose being eco-friendly.

Nancy: I agree, Joel.

Joel: That’s what ECO Green Cremation Systems has done. We have developed a system that has the ability to attack all incinerators on the planet. We have been afforded the the opportunity to take a technology that’s been around since 1934 & bring it into scale so it’s affordable for a cremation for humans, pets, medical waste & institutions. It’s just a real great process.

Nancy: It’s basically alkaline hydrolysis with some extra features, right, Joel?

Joel: That’s exactly what it is. The systems are in place right now, Nancy, across the nation. There are about 100. These are $5 to $10 million dollar pieces of equipment that perform alkaline hydrolysis on a very large scale, on a regular basis. For instance, The Mayo Clinic & Cornell University uses this process.

Nancy: Now, what are they using alkaline hydrolysis for at these facilities?

Joel: Well, at the Mayo Clinic, they are processing human remains from their medical schools, their medical labs, & from the surgeries that they’re performing. As far as Cornell University, they are already using it on animals, for their veterinary college, & they are introducing it to the medical college. They’re noticing a 67 percent reduction in not only CO2 output, but general cash outlay & getting the same job done that an incinerator will.

Nancy: That’s pretty amazing. I guess it’s pretty well accepted, then if the Mayo Clinic & Cornell University is using it.

Joel: Absolutely. The USDA has been using it for years for large diseased animal outbreaks. When there is mass destruction of animals, they’ve been using alkaline hydrolysis. It’s just more efficient.

Nancy: Now, I understand that this process cuts your natural gas usage by about 90 % & your electricity usage by 66 %. There’s zero mercury emission & the total carbon footprint is 18 X less than fire based cremation. Are those accurate figures?

Joel: Yes, they are, Nancy. We call our process “natural cremation,” or accelerated anaerobic digestion.

Nancy: Why is there such a resistance from the funeral community? We have been using traditional cremation for a very long time. This seems like it’s much more efficient. It’s much better for the atmosphere. Like you said, Joel, it’s better for you, the environment, and the earth.

Joel: The funeral service community is a traditional community. But the main issue is changing the way governments record this information. What’s being done in the 8 states that have already approved it is, they’ve just added a section on their death certificate that says, “Cremation by alkaline hydrolysis” or “Cremation by incineration.” That’s going to take a little bit of processing and some money. California has postponed it because they estimated that it will cost about $200K to get it orchestrated within the governmental system.

Nancy: Interesting. As a Funeral Director, you are on the cutting edge of this technology. You’ve taken
Alkaline hydrolysis and added some more energy efficient features that the competition doesn’t have. What made you decide to embrace this technology and develop these new products?

Joel: Well, it first started when I heard that folks were already doing it. I thought it was just a fantastic way to make a responsible choice. In order to make a responsible choice, you have to have the foundation as well as the resources to get something done. With our mechanical engineering, our chemists & our chemical engineers, we’ve put together a system to do just that and do it quite effectively at about a third of the cost of the competition & much more eco-friendly than traditional cremation.

Nancy: Joel, can you just take a minute and compare traditional cremation or incineration to the natural cremation?

Joel: In traditional cremation, you have to present the remains into a retort that has been pre-heated, so you have a startup period for your furnace. Next, it has to heat up to at least 1,800 degrees. Then you will have to process for 3-4 hours depending on the size of the decedent. Finally, you have a cool down period. Eco-friendly cremation saves a lot of time because there’s no start up timing & there’s no shutdown time used in the process. With green cremation in about 2 hours, a 200 pound body can be processed. Not only are you saving manpower, but you are saving fuel costs. Your average incinerator is going to cost a funeral home about $3,000 a month in gas costs. As soon as you install the unit, you’ll save 66 percent of your fuel costs.

Nancy: It also seems that this process would have a significant impact on processing clients that are obese?

Joel: Morbidly obese clients can be handled more effectively in our system. The system starts out with our smallest unit which can process a 400 pound person. Our largest unit can process up to 2,500 pounds of remains and that’s called our Enviro DR system for disaster recovery.

Nancy: That would have been great in the recent disaster we’ve had like the earthquake in Haiti.

Joel: Exactly. The De Mort system (the Enviro DR) can separate all the remains and classify them on a computer, so for example, Mary comes to us and says, “I lost my Mom in this disaster and I can’t find her. Here’s a picture.” We would have already taken a picture of Mary’s Mom & digitized it. Then, as she’s going through the pictures, she locates her Mother. We can inform her that we’ve taken the time & processed Mom ensuring that she had a dignified closure in her life and this results in a dignified transition for Mary. We can present Mary with pure calcium phosphate cremated remains so she can have closure as well.

At Eco-Green International we are being responsible for “The Earth, The Environment & You”. We are manufacturing equipment used in the animal and human cremation process. Alkaline Hydrolysis is the process, a natural cremation process. This process is a very familiar term to those in the Funeral & Cremation Industry, but sort of “scientific” for the rest of us! I have explained the process on several of our other blog posts and continue to share the word about the benefits of Natural Cremation-AAD our trademarked product and our Eco-Friendly method of cremation, but applying it to real life is easy when we are able to take a look at “the environment” we live in.

Today, while I was studying the “TeamOrca” website, I decided to learn just how much I know about Goliath Grouper. Living in SWFL for over 25 years, I remember when… Goliath Grouper was plentiful and were actually a part of several of my friends livelihood. Maybe someday in the future, after we change our ways, we will not be polluting the earth and damaging these creatures and others.

Not only is this an interesting article, but proves that not only is “TeamOrca” doing the right thing by continuing to study! By reducing the damage being done to the environment through traditional cremation and other disposition methods, is it possible for Goliath Grouper to thrive in future generations? I hope so!!

Now, Here’s the test question… and the answer.

Question Number 4: There is a lot of meat in one single goliath grouper, and re-opening the fishery will provide an important source of animal protein for those that catch the fish.

The Science Answers: False.

See the explanation after this video:

“We must remember that goliath grouper reached commercial extinction in the late 1980s. The species is extremely vulnerable to overfishing due to its slow growth, long life (possibly exceeding four decades), late sexual maturity (up to 8 years), strong site fidelity, the formation of spawning aggregations, and being unafraid of divers (even those with spearguns) [3,7]. Even recreational fishing could be extremely damaging as it has been demonstrated for other fish species: recreational landings in the US seriously impact many of the most-valued overfished species [9].

When the fishery existed, goliath groupers were mostly targeted for trophy fishing, that is, catching the biggest fish for show and tell. When the fish meat was used, 90 % of it ended up in canned food for pets (dogs and cats). There were several reports of drugs being smuggled inside the carcasses of dead goliaths, in their way to northern states. The closure of the fishery did not result in direct starvation to any US citizen.

While it is true goliath grouper are the largest grouper fish in the Atlantic ocean, and the second largest grouper fish in the world, just behind the giant grouper of the Indo-Pacific (Epinephelus lanceolatus), big size does not necessarily translate to food source. Here, we must be concerned about health risks. Since goliath grouper are a coastal species, with a prolonged juvenile phase living in mangrove habitats, they accumulate in their tissues the pollution we generate in our modern way of living, by the effect of bioaccumulation (toxins ingested with their prey). Indeed, muscle tissue in goliath grouper commonly contain methyl mercury -a toxic form of mercury which causes dangerous cardiovascular and neurological effects in humans-, often exceeding the United States governmental advisory criteria for human health [5]. Goliath grouper also die when red tides, or Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) from the dinoflagellate algae Karenia brevis, occur. Brevetoxin (a toxin produced by the dinoflagellate) is a potent neurotoxin that causes serious illness in humans who ingest marine life containing the toxin, or if they inhale the toxin aerosols [10]. HAB-originated fish kills in which huge numbers of goliath grouper die occur during multi-species mortality events, when manatees, dolphins and seaturtles also die. It has been demonstrated that the cause of death for the marine mammals is due to the ingestion of prey which contained the brevetoxin, and by the process of bioaccumulation, enough brevetoxin accumulated in the animal’s tissues to become the cause of death [11]. Preliminary data suggest brevetoxin accumulation is also the cause of death in goliath grouper (Frias-Torres, unpublished data). Hence, consumption of goliath grouper fillets could pose an additional brevetoxin health risk for humans. Finally, studies on pesticide levels contained in goliath grouper tissue have not been completed, but it is possible they follow a similar bioaccumulation pattern than that of methylmercury and brevetoxin.”

ECO-Green Cremation System, Inc. manufacturer of Natural Cremation-AAD® Alkaline Hydrolysis equipment. Anaerobic Digestion is the process by which our bodies decompose naturally when we are buried in the earth. Typically this anaerobic digestion process takes 20 years to fully decompose one human remain. In an ECO-Green Enviro Platform of equipment, Accelerated Alkaline Hydrolysis is used to speed up this process with a combination of the natural chemical bases of potassium and sodium, water, pressure, and high temperature.

Natural Cremation AAD® also provides numerous environmental benefits in comparison to a standard fire-based cremation while saving you money. Natural Cremation-AAD® uses one-tenth the natural gas of a fire based cremation and one-third the electricity. CO2 emissions are also cut by almost 90% and no mercury or lead is released to our air, nor are fillings and other metal objects, such as hip and knee replacements, which can be recovered intact and recycled. The remaining liquid has a pH of 8 or less. We have several models available all built to fit your space. Eco-Green Cremation is The Responsible Choice – For the Earth, The Environment, & For YOU.

I’ve just returned from a visit to Florida, my home for over 25 years. I cannot tell you how good it made me feel to see the process of “Alkaline Hydrolysis” as applied to Human Natural Cremation. When Realizing the process is simple, sterile, and so eco-friendly for our environment I just want to keep telling more and more people about it.

The simplest way for me to explain it, is to say, it is Alkaline Hydrolysis is just plain natural. If you imagine finding a human being years after their death, you would find natural bone remains. Just the same with AH.

I believe our enthusiasm to be shared equally with the other Caring Professionals in the Funeral and Cremation Industry who visited with us.

Our slogan, The Responsible Choice— For the Earth, The Environment & You just resonates when considering the other choices! Natural Cremation-AAD will definitely be the choice for me!

We have just returned from the annual CANA/NFDA shared event in Las Vegas. Again, again, Alkaline Hydrolysis was a key topic. What a difference a year makes. In December, Matthews, and Eco-Green International both installed human Alkaline Hydrolysis units in Funeral homes. Both of us installed in the state of Florida, one of 8 states currently approved for the AH process. It was great to interact with fellow Cremation and Funeral Professionals interested in learning more about the process and this year… they were actually to hear first hand, what it is about and HOW IT WORKS.
